WiMax vs WiFi vs 3G

The heat between all 3 wireless technology recently hots up as they battle against each other for the No. 1 spot of wireless technology. Each technology has its own benefits and disadvantages but the ultimate adoption will vary greatly depending on which region of the world they are going to deploy the technology in. For example, more advance countries like the United State or countries like Germany or France, 3G is a common technology to them. For them, they have wide WiFi hot-spot coverage in public areas such as parks and train stations so who need 3G anyway? For developing countries, they do not have the luxury of such high amount of wireless access points, thus making 3G a more popular choice for them. WiMax is set up to be both a fixed wireless and mobile access solution that could compete with both WiFi and 3G in the near future. For more information, visit 3GNewsroom.com

Pros & Cons About 3G!

What? 3G have cons too? Then why do people opt to change or use 3G when it is not so perfect afterall.

Well, first of all the pros, 3G connectivity is WIRELESS,  that means you could surf anywhere or do anything 3G related within the 3G coverage. Wow, then some people might say who needs 3G at the speed of 384 kbps when there is WiFi coverage at 2 mbps. They must have forgotten that WiFi only works within a 100 metres radius from the access point and the farther you are away from the access point, the weaker the connection is going to be.

Furthermore WiFi is not the safest connectivity you will get. Hotspots places and wireless local area networks place are often shared by many users linked to each access point. 3G on the other hand runs on the licensed 1900 band which only mobile operators can access. So your personal information is secure.

This may seems to be looking good for 3G technology but sadly, the technology is still new so the cost of operation is still on the high side thus it will affect the end users as well. If someone were to fork up a large sum of their salary to pay for their 3G services, they may well pay less and get a faster connection at some hotspot places.

What Is 3G?

We often hear of people say of the word 3G or 3rd Generation but what 3G is actually about?

3G or in full 3rd Generation Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (3GUMTS) is actually a broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia that transmit data ratesat 384 kilobits per second (kbps), up to 2 megabits per second (Mbps), offering a consistent set of services to mobile computer and phone users no matter where they are located in the world as long there is a 3G coverage.

Based on the GSM communication standard, UMTS, whom endorsed by major standards bodies and manufacturers, the system can have computer and phone users can be constantly attached to the Internet and as they travel they have access to 3G roaming service having the same set of capabilities no matter where they travel to. Users that uses 3G will have to access through a combination of terrestrial wireless and satellite transmissions. If users do not want to use 3G service yet, they can have multi-mode devices that switch to the older technology (GPRS & Edge).
